In a world where the stars seem just within reach, the ambitious journey of Agnikul Cosmos has faced a momentary pause. The Chennai-based startup, incubated at IIT Madras, has announced the postponement of its maiden rocket launch, originally scheduled for March 22, 2024. The mission, named ‘Agnibaan SOrTeD’ (Sub Orbital Technology Demonstrator), was set to lift off from its private launch pad within the ISRO campus at Sriharikota.
The postponement comes as a result of a ‘technical issue’ identified during the full countdown rehearsals. In a statement released on social media, the company expressed that the decision was made out of an abundance of caution, prioritizing safety over haste. The new launch date is yet to be announced, but the anticipation remains high.
Agnibaan SOrTeD represents a significant milestone for Agnikul Cosmos and the private space sector in India. The mission aims to demonstrate space transportation as being more accessible and economically efficient for customers. The rocket, a 6.2-meter tall vehicle with a lift-off mass of 575 kg, is equipped with sub-cooled Liquid Oxygen and Aviation Turbine Fuel as propellants. It also carries the distinction of having the world’s first single piece 3D-printed semi-cryogenic rocket engine.
The journey to an altitude of about 10 km before splashing down in the Bay of Bengal was to be a testament to the company’s innovative approach to rocketry. However, this delay, while a setback, is not a full stop. It is a reminder of the meticulous nature of space exploration and the resilience required to conquer it.
